It was a remarkably free morning with a rare opportunity to get a workout in. If I could only find my Pilates exercise mat, I could squeeze in a quick mat routine before the morning schedule kicks in. As I walked into the living room in search of my mat, I find only a bare corner. No mat in the bedroom nor in the TV room. Taking my search upstairs, I need only to walk past my six-year-olds room to solve the missing mat mystery. I peak in the doorway and there she is in a perfect warrior-one pose. “Hi Mommy” she says without losing her balance, “Wanna see my sun salutation?” I smile knowing that she has caught the Yoga bug, but sigh knowing that my quick workout is no longer a reality.
My daughter took a few weeks of Yoga in her summer camp and I am thrilled to see her working on her own. Get them young, they say. Build good exercise habits now and they’ll keep them forever. But what about me? Yes, I am selfish when it comes to my precious workout time. I see that I absolutely must get my daughter her own yoga mat. Not a problem these days.
Yoga for kids is an enormous industry. With a short search I uncover mats with bumblebees, frogs or ballerinas on them in colors fit for a kid. I settle on a lime green mat with frogs and butterflies on it. Cute and the right size for a budding Yogi. Now we can workout together and get more mommy and me time doing something that is good for both of us.
